Production schedules are one of the easiest ways to manage your business and your staff. This is because almost everything you need to schedule is already built into your scheduling software. For instance, your production schedule is essentially the foundation of your inventory system.
The biggest mistake people make when scheduling a production is thinking that because they have a job they can just schedule it and be done with it. In fact, you should only schedule those jobs that are in the best interest of your business. As an example I get to work on one of my projects. I’m actually getting a copy of a game called The Red Box and it’s a lot more complex than I thought it was supposed to be. It’s not perfect, but I think I’m going to have to come up with a better way to play the game.
Its hard to say in advance what the product will be. The product is still an ongoing project, so you can’t just say it will be ready when the final product is ready. You can say its going to be ready in a month, or six months, or a year, but you can’t promise it will be ready in a week. As long as you plan to have it in the game, you can schedule in production.
Production of games is more like writing a book, just that you do it every week with every author. Sometimes they come out, sometimes its just a couple of pages, sometimes its a whole book. The whole game should be planned, you cant really know whats going to happen until it happens.
As a gamer, I am always looking for ways to cut costs. Whether it be buying the right tools or the right gear, I find it really helps to plan ahead, so that if something goes wrong, I can have something ready to fix it. Games are the perfect example of this. As long as you plan to play the game, you can schedule in production.
